How it ALL BEGAN…
…When I turned 50, a huge window of opportunity opened. I was getting divorced, selling the family home, the kids were at uni, and my parents were well. For the first time in decades, nobody needed me. I’d buried my inner traveller for years, and suddenly it felt like the moment to do something entirely for myself.
But travelling solo wasn’t the plan. That happened by accident.
I wanted to do a four‑week ski instructor course in Austria — exciting, and only minimal midlife‑crisis vibes. Then I discovered I could do the same course in Argentina. Argentina! I’d never been to South America. I didn’t even know you could ski there. Amazing! I booked it.
Then I realised it was a long way to go just for a ski course. Maybe I should travel a bit while I was there. Just one problem: I had no one to go with. Most people my age were still working, had dependent kids, or didn’t want to travel the way I wanted to travel.
So the thought crossed my mind: “What if I go alone?”
And that’s when things escalated.
I booked the ski course, then a TEFL course in Peru for later in the year, and decided to travel solo in between. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I had an incredible experience and discovered the world of solo travel in midlife.
Now it actually unnerves me when I book holidays with family or friends. I find myself thinking, “Why are there so many people? Why are we discussing dinner plans? Why is everyone talking?”
Why Unescorted exists
Unescorted is for women like me: women 50+ who’ve spent years putting others first, carrying the load, doing the hard work — and who are finally ready to claim something that’s entirely theirs.
This community exists to make solo travel in the more mature stages of life feel normal, doable, and deeply rewarding. No pressure. No perfection. No pretending. Just women travelling on their own terms, discovering what the second half of life can look like when you stop waiting for someone to join you.
Forget the “Golden Years.” These are the Adventure Years.
The Mission
To empower women 50+ to travel solo with confidence, curiosity, and zero apology — and to prove that midlife isn’t the end of adventure, it’s the beginning of freedom.
